Abram thinks he has a bit of a problem. There's a famine in the land. Pharaoh fancies his wife. He needs to act and fast. Genesis 12 teaches us about how not to respond when things get hard. It also reminds us that no matter what happens, God is at work.

Christmas is an invitation to put your hope in Jesus. Writing hundreds of years before Jesus Isaiah lets us see what happens when we put our hope in Jesus, why we can put our hope in Jesus and points to how this is made possible.

This week James talks about how easy it is to become stuck in life, and particularly as a Christian. From the story of Abram, we can learn about both how easy it is to become stuck and how to become unstuck.

We are shaped by our history and before. In the story of Abram we hear about those who shaped where he began and what he stepped out from. Sometimes it’s hard to keep going, taking another step on our journey with God. This passage encourages to be obedient in stepping into all God has for us.

We see the city of Babel’s attempts to reach God by their own effort, to make a name for themselves, rather than living into the identity God has bestowed on them, we ask ourselves the question, “who are we?” Where is our identity rooted and where do we need to level the towers to our own greatness?
